El papel de los álbumes conceptuales en el desarrollo lírico-musical del hip-hop experimental de Estados Unidos (2000-2023)

Abstract

Este trabajo de investigación analiza la importancia del hip hop experimental y su desarrollo y evolución artística desde la década de 1990 hasta la actualidad. Para esto, se discutió algunos proyectos musicales importantes de hip hop original en cada periodo de tiempo por su influencia, sus características innovadoras y por sus trabajos conceptuales, los cuales siguen alguna temática en común o cuentan una historia. Asimismo, se realizó el mismo procedimiento histórico con el hip hop alternativo/experimental junto a otros subgéneros relacionados durante el mismo periodo de tiempo y cómo el Lo-Fi hip hop impactó en estas músicas. Posteriormente, se realizó un análisis de la producción y composición musical de tres álbumes conceptuales contemporáneos de hip hop experimental. Los objetos a estudiar elegidos son To Pimp A Butterfly (2015) de Kendrick Lamar, Some Rap Songs (2018) de Earl Sweatshirt e IGOR (2019) de Tyler, The Creator. El resultado de esta investigación reveló las razones del éxito que estos álbumes conceptuales recibieron, más las técnicas utilizadas en la producción y composición musical innovadoras en sus procesos de creación. Asimismo, se comprendió la relación entre la producción musical y la composición musical de estos álbumes y cómo llevaron al hip hop experimental a ser uno de los géneros musicales más importantes del mainstream en la década de 2020.

This investigation has the objective of explain the importance of experimental hip hop and it’s development and evolution since 1990 until nowadays. In order of achieving this goal, some important music works of classic hip hop were discussed in each period of time. Some topics included their influence on later albums, their innovative characteristics and their concept albums which follow a linear story or englobe any common topic. Also, the same historical methodology was used in the alternative/experimental hip hop and other related subgenres in between the same period of time. In addition, a section of this document was focused on the impact of Lo-Fi production in these albums and, then, an historical analysis of contemporary Lo-Fi Hip Hop. Later, there was a complete analysis of three contemporary concept albums of experimental hip hop in which historical background, musical production and composition was discussed as well. In this investigation, the chosen albums were Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly (2015), Earl Sweatshirt’s Some Rap Songs (2018) and Tyler, The Creator’s IGOR (2019). The results revealed the reasons for their critical acclaim and their innovation in sound and lyrics as well. Also, the balance between production and music composition was explained and how these albums made experimental hip hop an important music genre in current mainstream.
